David "Honeyboy" Edwards is one of the few remaining original practitioners of the acoustic Delta blues style. As a guitarist and country blues singer, Edwards has been playing" traditional and unadulterated Mississippi Delta blues" since he left his home in Shaw, Mississippi, at the age of fourteen. In 1942, Edwards began his recording career, cutting fifteen tracks for Library of Congress' Alan Lomax at Stovall's Plantation, as well as several Texas labels, and Sam Phillips' Sun Records in Memphis. Sonny Burgess has been through the music evolution and the revolution. His music spans five decades of air play, concerts, dance parties, and radio shows ! An original Sun recording artist, he and fellow band members put on a rock and roll show that was so full of energy that it became legend (The Pacers were Sonny Burgess' first band). Their 50's releases made the youngsters wanna dance and their parents have appoplexy. There was gyrating, stage sliding, and acrobatics. They would build a human pyramid in the middle of the dance floor climbing on top of each other and continuing to play all the while. With his red-dyed hair, matching stage suit and guitar, and wild stage performances, Burgess and the Pacers made mincemeat of the competition on many of the early-'50s rock & roll package tours. Formed in the Newport Beach area of Southern California in the late '50s, The Centurions did some recordings for the Shepherd and Del-Fi label, of which "Bullwinkle Part II," with its spooky, trebly bass and lead guitars, was the best. The band also cut some decent, if mostly generic, other sides for Del-Fi, powered by both guitars and raunchy saxes; the best of them, like "Bullwinkle Part II," made good use of minor melodies, reverb guitar, and throbbing bass lines. Best-known for their rock & roll standard "Pushin' Too Hard," the Seeds combined the raw appeal of garage rock with a fondness for ragged, trashy psychedelia. Sky Saxon (vocals) and guitarist Jan Savage formed the Seeds with keyboardist Daryl Hooper and drummer Rick Andridge in Los Angles in 1965. By the end of 1966, they had secured a contract with GNP Crescendo, releasing "Pushin' Too Hard" as their first single. Its raw, simple riff and Saxon's howling, half-spoken intonation established a pattern that remained almost unchanged throughout the group's career. The song climbed into the Top 40 early in 1967. These eight Chicano multi-instrumentalists from East Los Angeles had a local top ten hit with the cruising anthem, "Whittier Blvd" (inspired by the Rolling Stones' "2120 South Michigan Boulevard" and still popular in the area today) in 1965, that included several trademark aspects that set them apart from other bands of the era, particularly the use of brass instruments and a maniacal hyena-ish laugh. The Del-Tinos played from 1963 to 1966 and the line-up included young Cub Koda (guitar, vocals) Rusty Creech on bass and drummer Doug Hankes. Originally a drummer at age five, Koda switched over to guitar when he formed his first band. The group cut its first single -- Roy Orbison's "Go Go Go" -- in the fall of 1963, and released two more 45s independently before it disbanded in 1966. By this time, Koda had become so immersed in the blues that the last Del-Tinos single had the trio doing Muddy Waters' "I Got My Mojo Workin'" on one side and Robert Johnson's "Ramblin' on My Mind" on the other. Lowell Fulson took the smooth, jazz-tinged jump-blues of Texas to California, where he had rhythm-and-blues hits from the 1940s to the 60s. He wrote songs that were also recorded by Elvis Presley ("Reconsider Baby"), Otis Redding and Carla Thomas ("Tramp") and B.B. King ("Three O'Clock Blues").He had his first rhythm-and-blues hit, "Three O'Clock Blues," on the Swingtime label in 1948, and went on tour in 1950 with a band that included Ray Charles on piano. Other bands Fulson led would include Ike Turner on guitar and Stanley Turrentine or King Curtis on tenor saxophone. He continued to have hits, including a version of Memphis Slim's "Nobody Loves Me" that he retitled "Everyday I Have the Blues," and his own song, "Blue Shadows," in 1950. Although he lived in California, he began recording for the Chicago-based Checker label (part of Chess Records) in 1954, when he had a hit with "Reconsider Baby....
