Jimmy 'Duck' Holmes !
Ok you all know how much we love blues music here.
Not blues music for square people of course.
We like Blues filled up with hard liquor, black cats, the devil himself, a mojo hand , and John the conquer root.
So thanks to Jeff Konkel at Broke & Hungry Records.
Why ? ‘Cos this is the man who runs Broke & Hungry Records , a St. Louis-based independent record label dedicated to recording and releasing authentic country blues.
In a word, keeping the spirit alive.
"Broke & Hungry Records ain’t polite and they ain’t pretty. They don’t get played at cocktail parties. Nobody takes ‘em home to meet his mother."
Back to Bentonia represents both the debut CD for the 58-year-old Holmes and Broke & Hungry Records.
Well, to be honest, listening to this set, it is hard to believe that Holmes has remained hidden for so long.
The eleven sides here were cut in two sessions late last year. Eight acoustic sides were laid down at the Blue Front Café, 'on an unseasonably warm November evening', while the remaining three were cut at Jimbo Mathus's Delta Recording Studio in Clarksdale. These feature Jimmy playing electric guitar, supported by Sam Carr on drums. The results of both sessions are nothing short of mesmeric.
Fuckin’ great.
For the time being downhome and Delta blues fans are in for a treat – this is the real deal.
No wait, I’m being too polite here,
Jimmy "Duck" Holmes has given us a new hope !
