I think I’ve said quite the same thing last year but I know it's been a difficult year for some, a year of changes for others, a year of absolutely NOTHING for the rest of you, and fortunately for some, it’s been the year of good luck, wheter because your horrible aunt died and left you with a shit load of money, or it’s just because you met the woman of your life. Or the man of your life. Or both.
Anyway, it’s been a change even for this very blog, see, ‘twas a cool tiny blog with a lot of ripped 45 rpm and now pfffff look at this, only mixes, that’s a freakin’ shame. Ok, first of all, the ‘Blues Rules’ festival was a total blast.
Good friends,good times, good whiskey and a fantastic crowd. So things are getting really good for your host from now on !

And…ok so here’s the thing, I hope you won’t mind too much, but as things are getting tied for me, I can’t find the proper time to choose my records and pick up an unknown genius every week.
So I’m going to keep this blog alive of course (and frankly, I’ve been asking a lot of readers), thee bloody mixes are your favorites, so hell yeah, I’m gonna keep the mixes (maybe I don’t know, once a month, you tell me, sounds good to me anyway) but I have to really slow down things concerning the artists posts !

Speaking of Delta, I was quite sure I did a post about a real master but hell no...so here it is !
Born Booker T. Washington White, Bukka White started his career playing the fiddle at square dances and he claims to have met Charlie Patton early on, regardless, Patton was a large influence on White ! Oh and he's the one who gave his cousin B.B. King, his first guitar !
He first recorded for the Victor Records label in 1930, whom, like those of many other bluesmen, fluctuated between country blues and gospel numbers. His gospel songs were done in the style of Blind Willie Johnson, with a female singer accentuating the last phrase of each line.
Nine years later, while serving time, he recorded for folklorist John Lomax. The few songs he recorded around this time became his most well-known: "Shake 'Em On Down ». His 1937 version of this oft-recorded song is considered definitive, and became a hit while White was serving time in Parchman.
Bob Dylan covered his song "Fixin' to Die Blues", which aided a "rediscovery" of White in 1963 by guitarist John Fahey and ED Denson, which propelled him onto the folk revival scene of the 1960s.
Fahey and Denson soon travelled to meet White, and White and Fahey remained friends through the remainder of White's life, & Denson became his manager.

White died in February 1977 from cancer, at the age of 70, in Memphis, Tennessee.

The New Dimensions ! McFly, we’re back again in 1963 !
On the front cover of the Sundazed Lp, you’ll see a very young Michael Lloyd (who looks about 13) and future Three Dog Night keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon (who doesn't look much older). Yes folks, they were the New Dimensions, and they were all about 13 or 16 !!! And hell yeah, it's all very competently played, especially considering their youth. The history of this obscure group is certainly well documented in the liner notes, however, with the help of many recollections from Lloyd.
Anyway, the band never had any singles released. They worked with these hustler types by the name of Robert Hafner and Tony Hilder who had a deal with a tiny budget label called Sutton to issue the New Dimension albums as 'rack jobs.' Essentially that meant their records would be pressed on cheap vinyl normally reserved for placemats, packaged in fairly generic sleeves, and shipped directly to the cut out bins with no hope of promotion, airplay, or royalties. They had three studio albums, "Surf 'N Bongos," "Soul," and "Deuces & Eights." And Theye were part of a live album from the Santa Monica surf fair titled "Shake! Shout and Soul!"

Little Caesar !

Harry 'Little' Caesar was born into a family of steelworkers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 1928 and he grew up in Youngstown, Ohio. Harry’s youth was misspent as a gang member under his knickname ‘Kid Wolf’. He was imprisoned for six months during the 1940s for inciting riots, and upon release became a reformed character, joigning a church choir. Harry migrated from gospel to R&B and from Youngstown to Oakland, California, where he began working with the Peter Rabbit Trio and Que Martyn. His career out of music, which started in the late 1950s, was, if anything, more interesting than his career in music. He was a truck driver and actor in B-movies and TV series, including 'Baretta, Hill Street Blues,' 'Mannix,' ,'Hart To Hart,' and ‘The Dukes Of Hazzard’ ! Anyway, Caesar's tunes were full of pathos, and on cuts like the eerie, near-suicidal plaint "River," he comes across like a lo-fi Roy Orbison of soul, dripping with broken-hearted drama. (btw, the song is wracked with sobbing though, weirdly, ends with a toilet bowl being plunged !) He passed a way in 1994.

Ok a lil' bit of sun here...The R&B-inflected surf combo the Deltas formed at Fresno State College in 1961. Eventually billed as Jim Waller & the Deltas, the band featured a lineup of Waller on piano and organ, Terry Christofsen on guitar, Ray Carlson on saxophone, Terry Christenson on drums, and Eddie Atkinson on bass. The Deltas released an LP of instrumentals called Surfin' Wild on Arvee Records in 1963 (Sundazed reissued Surfin' Wild on CD in 1995).Raucous and fun, these dozen instrumentals sound more like King Curtis then they do Dick Dale, and they underscore how much pure surf instrumentals were influenced by straight, horn-driven R&B. Christofsen does get in his share of reverb-laden guitar riffs, but the Deltas were mostly about the sax and organ mix, and it is a sound that is both refreshing and familiar !

Renato Carosone !

Ok folks, I promised a friend ! No actually, a lotta friends !

Carosone was born in Naples and he studied piano at his hometown's Conservatory and obtained his diploma in 1937, when he was just 17. He soon signed a contract as a band leader for a tour of Africa.
In 1949 he was asked to put together a group for a club's opening night. After some auditions, he signed the Dutch guitarist Peter Van Wood and the Neapolitan drummer Gegè Di Giacomo: so the Trio Carosone was born. The trio became quartet with the Hungarian Gypsy musician Elek Bacsik on bass, guitar and violin.
During 1950s Carosone became more and more popular, his orchestra was on high demand both in Italy and abroad, and records sales were soaring high.
A hint of his worldwide success: some of his songs were translated into 12 languages and no fewer than thirty cover versions were recorded in the United States alone ! On 5 January 1957 Carosone and his band started off a successful American tour with a concert in Cuba. The last tour concert was a triumph at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York !
Fr the records, several of his hits were the result of this long and fruitful cooperation with the lyricist Nicola Salerno, who used the pseudonym Nisa. They could understand each other perfectly: just one hint by Carosone, and Nisa wrote a funny, witty little story about it.
Anyway, Carosone surprisingly announced his retirement in 1960, when he was still at the top of his success. His decision caused an uproar. Some even suspected obscure criminal threats. Away from the spotlight, Carosone turned to other interests, mainly painting.
He died in Rome in 2001.

Marv Johnson !

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Johnson began his career singing with a doo-wop group called the Serenaders in the mid 1950s. With budding talents not only as a singer but as a songwriter and pianist, he formed in 1958 a partnership with the young Berry Gordy, who was then working as a songwriter and producer for Jackie Wilson. Gordy produced Johnson's earliest releases on Kudo, and launched his Tamla label with Johnson's single "Come To Me", Between 1959 and 1961, Johnson would issue nine Billboard Hot 100 singles !
Johnson's early Motown issued singles would be the precedent to the future sound and success of the label, which by the time Johnson began issuing his Motown records nationally in 1965, had become the biggest independent label in the world.
Meanwhile, with Johnson retiring in 1970 to become a sales ececutive at Motown, after almost two decades working behind the scenes in the music business (& he also wrote songs for Tyrone Davis and Johnnie Taylor), he returned to performing in 1987, touring with the "Sounds Of Motown" package. He continued singing into the 1990s, releasing a solo album on the London based Motor City Records label.
Johnson collapsed and died of a heart attack at a concert in South Carolina in 1993 at the age of 54.

Phil Phillips !

Philip Baptiste performed with his brothers in a gospel group called the Gateway Quartet and worked as a bellhop before he recorded "Sea of Love" in 1959. Baptiste changed his name to Phil Phillips, and dubbed his backing vocalists The Twilights. After a Baton Rouge disc jockey played the song repeatedly, the recording sold heavily and was leased to Mercury Records. "Sea of Love" went to #2 and spent 14 weeks in the top 40, as well as reaching #1 on the R&B chart. Yes folks, it sold over two million copies in 1959 ! (Nonetheless, Phillips and received no further royalties for the song or its recording…)
Phillips did not release an album to capitalize on his success, due to the unfavorable terms of his deal. "Because I decided to fight for what was rightfully and legally mine, a full album that I recorded was never released. I’m not being paid, nor have I ever been paid, as an artist for 'Sea of Love'. I never received justice and to this day have not received justice."
So hell yes, it’s hard to believe, but Bear Family's 2008 "Sea of Love" is the first CD compilation of Phil Phillips recordings — a bloody disservice to a singer responsible for one of the great slow dance singles of the rock &roll era !!!
Anyway, Phillips' voice is always winning !
And in October 2007, Phillips was honored for his contributions to Louisiana music with induction into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.

BUDDY KNOOOOOX !!!
Ok, Buddy Wayne Knox was born in 1933 in the tiny farming community of Happy, Texas .
One fine day, after performing on the same 1956 radio show as fellow Texan Roy Orbison and his "Teen Kings" band, Orbison suggested Knox go see record producer Norman Petty at his studio in Clovis, New Mexico. Knox recorded three songs at Petty's studio, most notably "Party Doll" that later was released on the Roulette label and went to No.1 in 1957 !
In the early 1960s Buddy signed with Liberty Records and released a number of more mainstream pop records, featuring string arrangements and vocal backup singers.
Buddy Knox died of lung cancer in 1999. He is buried in Dreamland Cemetery, in Canyon, Texas.

Ok, Lee Moses (as we like them here, a bit sadly I must say) is a true lost figure in the history of R&B !
He was born in 1941, in Atlanta, GA, and he formed his first band, the Showstoppers, in the 1950s, and the group was an extremely big draw in the Atlanta area. He met New York producer and scene hustler Johnny Brauntly around 1965 and began working as a session guitarist for him (along with another session player, some left-handed guitarist named Jimi Hendrix, don't know if you've heard about him) in the Big Apple.
Moses cut three singles for Musicor Records in 1967, followed by a couple more for Dynamo Records and a nine-track solo LP in 1971 for Maple Records entitled Time and Place, which saw him backed by his own band, now called the Disciples, and various members of the Ohio Players.
He returned to Atlanta in the 70’s and the city remained his home base for the rest of his life. He gigged locally there but apparently did not record again.
He died in Atlanta in 1997.
Frankly, Lee Moses is pretty hard to top for intensity and soulfulness !

Woohoo ! Let’s Go ! Cheerleaders, Go !
(That's an ancient and obscure ritual to bring cheerleaders straight to your home, just trying sorry...)
Formed in 1962 by Mike Gordon, the Routers recordings were made primarily by session musicians rather than an actual group with the exception of Gordon. The Routers first release in September 1962 was "Let's Go !". Its infectious “clap clap clap-clap-clap clap-clap-clap-clap Let's Go! " chant became a favorite of cheerleaders and crowds worldwide (I mean, even when I walk in the streets of Paris, people always shout that at me).
The recording was instigated by record producer Joe Saraceno and his producing and songwriting partner Mike Gordon. Like many pop instrumentals recorded in Los Angeles, California at this time, such as those by B. Bumble and the Stingers, it involved Mike Gordon, (guitar), Plas Johnson (saxophone) and Earl Palmer (drums), probably with Plas’ brother Ray Johnson on bass guitar.
Later Routers recordings, which continued to be issued up to 1964 but with less commercial success, involved Mike Gordon, (guitar), Leon Russell (piano) and Hal Blaine (drums). The following album, ‘Charge !’ is extremely brilliant and funny - his spirited release features a dozen modernized rocking instrumental interpretations of college fight songs as well a few equally peppy originals. hese new souped-up readings are the antithesis of the old staid Sousa-influenced marching band arrangements and feature wailing guitar solos and hot-steppin' bongo beats in place of the traditional tuba, piccolo, and bombastic bass drum.
Interestingly, many of these mod interpretations continue to show up in TV adverts and as musical beds for sports announcers !

Elder Roma Wilson !

Elder Roma Wilson was born December 22, 1910, in Tupelo, Mississippi, one of 10 children raised on his parents' cotton farm. When Wilson was 15, he taught himself to play the harmonica, using an instrument that his older brothers had discarded. He was ordained when he was only 17 years old and became an evangelist, preaching at different churches until he was appointed pastor of his own congregation.
When his children were still young, he and three of his sons, whom he had taught to play harmonica, often performed their unique style of religious music on the streets of Detroit. Joe Van Battle, owner of Joe's Record Shop, covertly recorded their street playing in 1948 and sold his recordings of "Lily of the Valley" and "Better Get Ready" to the Gotham label. These now legendary 78 rpm releases introduced the music of Wilson to audiences in Europe and the United States. It wasn't until the 1980s that Wilson learned of these records, and eager gospel music listeners learned the life story of the "unknown" musician identified on the recordings as "this charismatic preacher who blew harp" !

The Mojo Men !!!
Yeah, a bit of history, The Mojo Men recorded for the Autumn Records label in San Francisco, California. One of their hits, 1965's "Dance With Me", and a number of other records, were produced by Sylvester Stewart, later better known as Sly Stone. (Staaaaand)
One of the first San Francisco psychedelic bands, the Mojo Men began as a British Invasion inspired group, even covering the Rolling Stones' "Off The Hook". But following the arrival of drummer Jan Ashton, the group developed more intricate arrangements and harmonies. They were one of the premier bands that help shape the San Francisco Sound !
Their many singles never fully displayed the band's considerable songwriting and vocal talents, and after changing their name to the Mojo and finally just Mojo, they disbanded in the late '60s.

Jim Lowe !

Ah, an old time fav !!!
Missourian Jim Lowe was working in Chicago as a disc jockey, trying to find his niche in music, in 1954. That year, he was signed to Chicago's Mercury label, and wrote and recorded country and western material. One of his songs was the original version of the self-penned "Gambler's Guitar." Lowe soon moved to New York to continue his radio career, and switched to Dot Records in 1955. His first successful attempt with Dot was the novelty "Close the Door (They're Coming in the Windows). A few months later, he recorded another novelty, "Green Door," in a Greenwich Village apartment. This time, it was pure gold, rising to #1. A million-seller and gold record recipient, Lowe's 1956 hit "Green Door" was written by Marvin Moore and Bob Davie. After a few more moderate hits for Dot Records, Lowe concentrated on his radio career. He retired in 2004 at the age of 77, and lives in Southampton, New York.

A quick note to introduce ourselves to the great Roosevelt Graves and a good excuse to play 3 of my favorite tracks !
On all his recordings, Roosevelt Graves played with his brother Uaroy Graves, who was also nearly blind and played the tambourine. They were credited as "Blind Roosevelt Graves and Brother". Their first recordings were made in 1929 for Paramount Records.
For a number of years, the subject of Uaroy's identity was disputed. In several books, magazine articles, and album liner notes that mentioned the Graves brothers, the names "Aaron" or "Leroy" were substituted for Uaroy, on the assumption that the otherwise unknown name Uaroy must have arisen due to the poor penmanship of a recording company employee whose handwritten notes were misinterpreted.
In July 1936 they were located by talent broker H. C. Speir, who arranged for them to record in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, according to some sources at the train station although Speir later told Wardlow that the recordings took place in a temporary studio in the Hotel Hattiesburg at Mobile Street and Pine Street. For the session they were joined by local piano player Cooney Vaughn, who performed weekly on radio station WCOC in Meridian prior to World War II, & the trio were billed on record as the Mississippi Jook Band.

Happy new year 1964 !
Early in his career (right at the outset, in fact) 18-year-old Jim Messina (Buffalo Springfield, Poco, Loggins & Messina) was a devotee of surf music, enamored of the music you know well here. The Jesters was among his early professional efforts, a surf band that included, along with Messina, Bill Beckman and Ron House on guitars, Jim Sholstedt on bass, Dave Archuleta on saxophone, and Larry Cundieff on drums. They won a lot of local band competitions in California, where the competition in the field was still fierce in 1965 and 1966, and were good enough to get to record an entire LP for Audio Fidelity, which has been one of my fav record ever since I can’t remember, I mean, Messina's guitar work is truly exceptional !

Hey friends, you know that silly songs and halloween match fine for me (& you), and it ain’t over yet ! A good example ?
I just wanted to share this one with you (and make you discover a beautiful world btw)… Hershell Gordon Lewis !

'The Godfather of Gore', so-named for his numerous psychotronic classics (37 and counting!), including She-Devil on Wheels, Blood Feast, and the newly released Blood Feast 2 to name a few, contributing vocals, lyrics, and music, and backed by Cleveland's own Amazing Pink Holes, H.G. delivers rousing renditions of his theme songs from his films Moonshine Mountain and 2000 Maniacs!
(One of my all time fav, filmed in 14 days)
The blood-splattered 6" was strictly limited to 2000 maniacal copies and will not be repressed. (I have one I have one)
This release marked the return of The Amazing Pink Holes, recording for the first time in 15-plus years !

Had a good Halloween ?
Mine was perfect ! It’s always good to hear the neighbours the next morning saying ‘Did you hear the chainsaw and the screams at 4 am ?’…

Anyway, back to action, let's shake some dust !

Yeah, Mickey Baker and Sylvia Vanderpool !!!
This popular duo began recording together in 1956 and enjoyed an US R&B chart-topper that year with ‘Love Is Strange’, which peaked at number 11 in the US pop chart the following year. This enduring call-and-response song is rightly regarded as a classic of its genre, and later became a minor UK hit when recorded by the Everly Brothers.
Prolific session work for Atlantic Records, Savoy, King and Aladdin earned the former the epithet Mickey ‘Guitar’ Baker, while the latter had made her recording debut with jazz trumpeter Oran ‘Hot Lips’ Page as early as 1950. Yep, Mickey was a music instructor and Sylvia one of his pupils !
The duo eventually bought their own nightclub, established a publishing company, and formed their own record label , and they had further success with ‘There Oughta Be A Law’ (1957) and, after a brief hiatus as a duo, ‘Baby You’re So Fine’ (1961), but their career together was undermined by commitments elsewhere. They continued to record together until 1965. After that, Mickey had a successful career as a studio musician. Sylvia had a huge hit in 1973 with the song "Pillow Talk".

Ronnie Hawkins !

Yep, Ronald "Ronnie" Hawkins is a cousin to fellow rockabilly artist Dale Hawkins ! Known as "Rompin' Ronnie" Hawkins or "The Hawk", he was a key player in the 1960s rock scene in Toronto, Canada and his career has spanned 50 years !
Hawkins was born in 1935 in Huntsville, Arkansas and came to Canada in 1958. His first gig was at the Brass Rail Tavern in London, Ontario where he became an overnight success. Hawkins decided to move to Canada permanently, and in 1964 became a permanent resident.
After a move to Ontario, as band members dropped out- with the exception of drummer Levon Helm, they were replaced with four Canadian musicians who eventually moved on with Helm as their fifth member, backing Bob Dylan in the late 1960s, after developing a world-famous sound and band of their own, taking the name, The Band. Other musicians Hawkins recruited provided the makings of Robbie Lane & The Disciples, and Janis Joplin's Full Tilt Boogie Band.
Anyway, if you don’t know that wild cat (where the hell have you been I might ask), this is your day !

Ken Nordine's Colors !

The voice-over man from a thousand commercials in the US, Ken Nordine registers in your subconscious instantly: Wait, I know that guy! Smooth as an ice sculpture and ringing with "the voice of a sponsor," Nordine has personified authority since the 1960s. During the 1940s, he was heard on The World's Great Novels and other radio programs broadcast from Chicago. He attracted much wider attention when he recorded the aural vignettes on albums feature Nordine's narration over cool cool cool jazz by the Chico Hamilton jazz group, recording under the alias of Fred Katz, who was then the cellist with Hamilton's quintet.
Nordine began performing and recording such albums at the peak of the beat era and was associated with the poetry-and-jazz movement. However, some of Nordine's "writings are more akin to Franz Kafka or Edgar Allan Poe" (or even Dr. Seuss-like exploration of the meanings of different colors here), than to the beats. Many of his word jazz tracks feature critiques of societal norms. Some are lightweight and humorous, while others reveal dark, paranoid undercurrents and bizarre, dream-like scenarios. Many of the pieces are parables on racism and human behavior, but they're also totally silly, and meant to be !
Anyway, all your mix tapes will be very happy that you've bought this strange record to flavor them with.

Summer's gone godammit !

Well, back to work.
And I want my scalps.

Ann Cole was a genuinely great soul singer who had the misfortune to be too far ahead of her time. She was daring enough to record "Got My Mojo Working," which she'd performed on-stage (which was how Muddy Waters found the song) in 1956.
Cole also cut records on the Timely, Baton, and Sir labels, and in 1956 she was voted the Most Promising Female R&B Vocals. Cole cut many records, but only ever had one pop-chart hit, in 1962 with "Don't Stop the Wedding" on Roulette.
The A-side was a sort of answer record to the Etta James song "Stop the Wedding"; ironically, "Don't Stop the Wedding"'s B-side, "Have Fun," was also her last R&B charting song.

Wynona Carr was born in Cleveland, OH, where she started out as a gospel singer, forming her own five-piece group The Carr Singers around 1945 and touring the Cleveland/Detroit area. Being tipped by The Pilgrim Travelers, who shared a bill with Carr in the late 1940's, Art Rupe signed her to his Specialty label, giving Carr her new stage name "Sister" Wynona Carr (modelled after pioneering gospel singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe) and cutting some twenty sides with her from 1949 to 1954, including a couple of duets with Specialty's biggest gospel star at the time, Brother Joe May.
Although she recorded rarely, Carr nevertheless remained a highly prolific songwriter, composing poetic, topical material often inspired by headlines of the day; she cut dozens of demos for Specialty, and ironically enough earned more money from sales of her sheet music than from her actual recordings.
After successfully touring white nightclubs in 1954 with Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Marie Knight, Carr finally broke her ties with gospel to pursue a career singing R&B; in 1957, she scored with the hit ballad "Should I Ever Love Again," but again fate was against her; at the same time the record was rising on the chart, she was stricken with tuberculosis, and spent the next two years on the sidelines, convalescing at her parents' home. As the 1970s dawned, Carr went into seclusion; her health continued to decline, and she died on May 12, 1976. Damn.

The throbbing guitar sound of Garfield Akers was a primary influence on subsequent generations of Mississippi bluesmen, with the likes of John Lee Hooker and Robert Wilkins citing him as an influence!
Born around 1902 in Bates, Mississippi, Akers remains a shadowy figure; after honing his skills at local dances and house parties, he relocated to the Hernando area, where he worked by day as a sharecropper. After moving on to Memphis, in 1929 he made his first Vocalion label recordings at the Peabody, accompanied by guitarist Joe Callicott; between this first date and a 1930 session for Brunswick, four Akers performances still exist - his two-part signature "Cottonfield Blues," "Jumpin' and Shoutin' Blues," and "Dough Roller Blues," one of the first variations on Hambone Willie Newbern's seminal "Roll and Tumble."
His most well-known song is his debut, the Cottonfield Blues, which Don Kent praised with the words "only a handful of guitar duets in all blues match the incredible drive, intricate rhythms and ferocious intensity" and called Akers "one of the greatest vocalists in blues history". Michael Gray appreciated it as "the birth of rock ’n’ roll … from 1929!"
Nothing is known about Akers after the pair split as a performing duo although it is believed that he died around the end of the 1950's or the beginning of the 1960's, possibly in Memphis...

Mickie Most & The Gear !

Yep, before he became the successful record producer of The Animals, Herman's Hermits, Donovan, Suzi Quatro and the Jeff Beck Group to name a few, Mickie Most (born Michael Peter Hayes (20 June 1938 – 30 May 2003)) travelled to South Africa with his wife Christina, and formed a pop group, Mickie Most and the Playboys.
(not with his wife though).
The band scored 11 consecutive Number 1 singles playing mostly cover versions of Ray Peterson, Gene Vincent, Buddy Holly and Eddie Cochran. Returning to London in 1962, Most appeared on package tours as well as recording "Mister Porter", a minor hit in 1963, and….BANG !, he recorded these two bloody fantastic tracks in 1965 with a young Jimmy Page hammering out the guitar work !

Evans ((born 5 March 1938, in Queens, New York) performed in his high school years, got a scholarship to Columbia University and promptly set up his own radio show. His early career days were spent crooning in small clubs and aboard a cruise ship !
Evans began to score hit records in the early '60s, including "Seven Little Girls Sitting In The Back Seat", the fantastic "Happy-Go-Lucky Me" and "Hushabye, Little Guitar". He came up with another hit in 1979 with the morbid "Hello, This Is Joannie".
His activities as a songwriter easily pass up this perfectly respectable track record. Besides the ultra-hit written for Bobby Vinton ("Roses Are Red, My Love"), there was also a timely hit for the Kalin Twins entitled "When", a series of donations to the cause of Elvis Presley including "Something Blue" and "I Gotta Know" and many other songs for Jackie Wilson, Frankie Lymon, Fabian & the Coasters !
Mr Evans has soloed on many a commercial jingles and has been seen and heard on the "David Letterman Show", "As the World Turns", "Guiding Light" and "All My Children". His voice can be heard in the Woody Allen films, "Mighty Aphrodite" and "Everyone Says I Love You".
And that goes without saying, Happy-Go-Lucky Me" is the theme of John Waters' cult classic, "Pecker" !

The Tornadoes !

All hail The Tornadoes !
A bloody brilliant surf band from Redlands, California, and a real family band, their lineup consisted of two brothers (Gerald and Norman Sanders), their cousin Jesse Sanders and a friend, Leonard Delaney.
They started out as an instrumental group from San Bernardino, CA, called the Vaqueros. The Tornadoes were the first band to receive national airplay with a surf instrumental !The song was of course, "Bustin' Surfboards", released on Aertaun Records in 1962, and it has since become a classic and mainstay of the surf genre ! The album with the same name was released in 1963. And for the record, the band temporarily changed their names to The Hollywood Tornadoes, because the British band the Tornado(e)s, were charting with the song "Telstar".

Scotty McKay !

Unfortunately, Max Lipscomb is probably better remembered for the three months or so that he was a member of Gene Vincent's Blue Caps than for his own solo career as Scotty McKay !
Max began his life as a Blue Cap as a backing singer, but was soon moved to rhythm guitar and he ended up playing piano (the first time a piano was used on a Blue Caps session) at the December 1957 sessions.
Lipscomb travelled to Philadelphia to look up Frank Slay and Bob Crewe, who agreed to record him, and - apparently at the suggestion of their business partner Dick Clark - changed his name to Scotty McKay. Under the direction of Slay and Crewe, McKay recorded "Rollin' Dynamite"/ "Evenin' Time" for Parkway. In that same year, Scotty was signed to Johnny Vincent's Ace label, on which he had six singles released between September 1960 and October 1962. The first and best of these was "Little Liza Jane", with accompaniment by Fats Domino's band.
By 1965, The Scotty McKay Quintet found themselves a cameo role in a low budget Vincent Price horror flick for AIP based on Edgar Allen Poe's "The Black Cat" where he appears briefly on screen performing his own tune Sinner Man and covers of Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry.
His later years were spent dabbling in Christian music.
A heart attack claimed him on March 17, 1991.

Carl Belew !

Hello Hello Hell-o!!!
Carl Belew is one of a long list of performers who moved on from making small rockabilly records to country music fame as both a singer and songwriter.
His rockers include 'Cool Gator Shoes' and 'Folding Money' on Four Star for whom he made his debut in 1955 after being brought to the company's attention by Marvin Rainwater. By the following year, he gained his first widespread exposure thanks to appearances on a pair of California-based radio programs, Town Hall Party and The Cliffie Stone Show. In 1957, he performed on the Louisiana Hayride.
Our man is best remembered as a songwriter whose work was covered by an eclectic group of artists ranging from Patsy Cline to Gene Vincent to Andy Williams.
Carl Belew sadly died of cancer on Halloween in 1990 at the young age of 59.

It must be rain-ain-drops…
Fuck yeah, Dee Clark had a wonderfully impassioned tenor voice !
Clark made his first recording in 1952 as a member of the Hambone Kids, who scored an R&B hit with the song "Hambone." In 1953, he joined an R&B group called the Goldentones, who later became the Kool Gents and were discovered by Chicago radio DJ Herb Kent upon winning a talent competition. Kent got the Kool Gents signed to Vee-Jay record label, subsidiary Falcon/Abner.
Clark struggled to forge his own style, mimicking Clyde McPhatter on the follow-up "Seven Nights" and aping Little Richard on 1958's "Oh, Little Girl."(included here) Neither charted, but when Little Richard himself abruptly quit performing to enter Bible college, his booking agent hired Clark to fulfill his remaining live dates; he ultimately spent five months on the road with Richard's backing band the Upsetters, also enlisting the group for studio dates.
Anyway, Clark embarked on a solo career in 1957 and over the next four years landed several hits, including the major success (in 1962) "Raindrops ».
This plaintive offering, co-written by Clark and Phil Upchurch, eventually sold in excess of one million copies. Sadly, Clark was unable to repeat this feat, but continued on Chicago-based Constellation with a spate of moderate R&B hits, namely, "Crossfire Time" (1963), "Heartbreak" (1964), and "TCB" (1965). His career faded after Constellation went out of business in 1966.
Dee Clark suffered a heart attack and died on December 7, 1990, sadly at age 52.

Bobby Lee Trammel !

Easter, the principal festival of the Christian church year, celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his Crucifixion.
Now, let's celebrate the resurrection of Bobby Lee Trammell, who, in spite of his undeniable huge talent, never had a major hit record.
Amen.

Working for the Ford Motor Company by day, Trammell played clubs by night and was signed to the Fabor label where he recorded his own song, the spirited "Shirley Lee". The record sold encouragingly and was released nationally. Ricky Nelson recorded the song as the opening track on his 1958's Lp, and wanted Trammell to write for him but, typically, Trammell couldn't be bothered.
Yep, for the historical book, our Bobby once went to Memphis but when Sun’s Sam Phillips told him that he should rehearse, Trammell became bored and moved to Los Angeles !

Performing, Trammell became excessively wild and would even strip off. The country music songwriter and promoter Tillman Franks, described him as "downright vulgar, ten times worse than Elvis". He never appeared at the Grand Ole Opry as he couldn't be trusted. Appearing with Jerry Lee Lewis, he sabotaged the star's piano and, performing in a bar, he'd leap on the counter and kick off the glasses.
In 1960 Trammell recorded "Woe, Woe Is Me", written by another wild man, Dorsey Burnette. When the radio station KFWB refused to play it, Burnette persuaded Trammell to climb the radio tower and sing it from the top. The police tried to talk him down and he dropped his guitar into their midst. Whether it was accidental or not, Trammell was fined $250.
He wrote and performed songs for the twist craze, notably "Arkansas Twist" (1962). During the mid-1960s, he grew his hair and billed himself as "The First American Beatle". He then made the relatively sane country-rock Love Isn't Love, including maudlin songs about his mother. A single, "New Dance In France", with a frantic vocal and a dubbed audience had a cult following during the punk era !
In 1984 Trammell performed on a rockabilly festival at Eindhoven, Holland. Wanting to outshine the other performers, he wore a Superman outfit but when he jumped on a piano, he lost his balance and broke his wrist !
By the way, outside of performing Trammell was a public-spirited man. He became a Democratic politician and was elected to the Arkansas House Of Representatives in 1997. His political friends asked him to perform but he thought it unwise as his other self might take over and ruin his new career !

The Mighty Hannibal !

Hey fellow readers !
We're not gonna talk 'bout Bob in Twin Peaks, but we’re talking today ‘bout the career of James Shaw, who recorded for a wide range of labels as Jimmy Shaw, Hannibal, The Mighty Hannibal and King Hannibal.
No matter what name he used, though, or what label he appeared on, there was one consistent thread running through all of his music. Hannibal was one sensational soul singer.
Born James Shaw he started singing doo wop as an Atlanta teenager, and eventually released a string of moderately successful (and generally highly praised) singles for a variety of independent labels. But it was the prophetic Shurfine hit "Hymn No. 5," a sobering gospel-blues about a black soldier writing home from Vietnam, that Hannibal will perhaps be best known for. Released in 1966, the tune beat the white hippie acts to the punch by at least a year in its anti-war consciousness. But by now, however, Hannibal had developed a serious heroin habit and was spending more time as a pimp than a performer !

Roy Brown !

On board with Mr Roy Brown !
Born Roy James Brown in New Orleans, Brown started as a gospel singer and after a move to Los Angeles some time in the 1940s, and a brief period spent as a professional boxer in the welterweight category, he won a singing contest in 1945 at the Million Dollar Theater covering "There's No You" by Bing Crosby.
Brown and his band "The Mighty Men" were spectacular performers, with the kind of crowd pleasing stage histrionics for which Little Richard would soon be famous !
Unfortunately, tastes changed and Brown could not keep up.
The decline of his fortunes coincided with his successfully winning a lawsuit against King Records for unpaid royalties in 1952, one of the few African American musicians to do so in the 1950s. This has led some, such as author Nick Tosches (in his book Unsung Heroes of Rock 'n' Roll, which contains a chapter on Brown – gotta have it folks) to believe that Brown may have been blacklisted. When his popularity ebbed in the rock and roll era, he tried teen-slanted songs like "School Bell Rock", but had little success and more or less retired.
His popularity was at its lowest at the end of the 1950s, but he sporadically managed to find work through the 1960s. To supplement his income, he worked as an encyclopedia salesman !
Shortly before his death he performed at the Whisky A Go-Go in West Hollywood, California and headlined the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival during the spring of 1981.

Frankie Lee Sims !

Mr Frankie Lee Sims picked up a guitar when he was 12 years old. By then, he had left his native New Orleans for Marshall, TX. After World War II ended, he played local dances and clubs around Dallas and crossed paths with T-Bone Walker, and he'd cut his first 78s in 1948 in Dallas.
The guitarist recorded fairly prolifically for Los Angeles-based Specialty into 1954, then switched to Johnny Vincent's Ace label (and its Vin subsidiary) in 1957 to cut the mighty rockers "Walking with Frankie" and "She Likes to Boogie Real Low," both of which pounded harder than a ballpeen hammer.
Sims mostly missed out on the folk-blues revival of the early '60s that his cousin Lightnin' Hopkins cashed in on handily. When he died at age 53 in Dallas of pneumonia, Sims was reportedly in trouble with the law due to a shooting incident and had been dogged by drinking problems.

Ray Martin (Born 'Raymond Wolfgang Kohn', and later anglicised his name) was a British orchestra leader and was noted for his light music compositions.
Allmusic journalist, Bradley Torreano states "Ray Martin created a legacy for himself in British popular music through his work with his orchestra during the 1950s. In 1957, he emigrated to the U.S.. He composed, arranged, and conducted on recordings for Imperial, but he's best remembered for his albums for RCA. The two bloody fantastic tracks included here are taken from Martin's Dynamica (who is one of the highlights of RCA's Stereo Action series.)
His regular appearances on radio and television kept him in the public spotlight, while his position at EMI Records made him an influential producer at the label. His use of pseudonyms has blurred the path of his career through the years, making his many contributions even harder to keep track of !

Howdy-Ho Y'all !
Something perfect for this winter, while dreaming of waves !
The Revels weren’t an actual group, but one of the several surf-hot rod acts of the 1960s that were actually comprised of California session players and songwriters. They released one album, a novelty-concept LP of sorts jammed with songs about the then-hot slot car craze. Masterminded by Gary Usher (who produced the record and wrote most of the songs with Roger Christian). Their recording range from downright cool and fun to modestly interesting. Their impact on the music scene far outweighed their own success, and the legend lives on !
They were formed out of a San Luis Obispo, California high school band in 1957, naming themselves Gil Serna & The Rockets, and being renamed The Revels in early 1959 by leader Norman Knowles. The name reflected the group’s penchant for partying and beer drinking !
The band become known for, in tandem with their own legendary drinking. Some tunes were an allusion to guitarist Dan Arnold’s ability to guzzle a can of beer in four seconds, and with its beer can fizzing sound effects it set a precedent for Revels singles…
They were pioneers of sorts, and definitely figure in the early history of developing surf - and beer drinking bands !

Frankly, my life has been pretty much Doo-Woply lately.

The Orioles have been called “the first R&B vocal group !” (yeah, like New Kids On The Boll...hum,Block)
Formed in 1947 as the Vibranaires in their hometown of Baltimore, they changed their name to the Orioles (the Maryland state bird) a year later. These five street-corner harmony pioneers imparted a skilled, soulful edge to the standard pop-crooning style of the day, and their appearance marked a shift in popular taste from big bands to small vocal groups.
The Orioles established the basic pattern for the doo-wop sound: wordless, melismatic harmonies surrounding the tenor vocals of Sonny Til (born Earlington Carl Tilghman) and George Nelson’s baritone. Their string of hits included three #1 R&B singles in the late Forties and early Fifties: “It’s Too Soon to Know,” “Tell Me So” and “Crying in the Chapel,” all recorded for the Natural label (later Jubilee).

Dean Carter !

Hey people, it's Dean Carter time !
Carter is a singer-guitarist with the heart and much of the sound of a '50s rockabilly wildman, yet recorded music that updated that rockabilly spirit with '60s garage rock and dashes of soul, and even a bit of psychedelia here and there. Carter didn't put out a whole lot of records in the '60s, and those he did put out were heard by few. Yet one of those singles in particular, 1967's "Jailhouse Rock"/"Rebel Woman" (on the small Milky Way label), is highly valued by '60s garage collectors, even if its rockabilly influence made it a little anachronistic.
He recorded for the Ping label in 1961 under his real name, on the more established Fraternity label in 1962 as Arlie Nevil, and then for Limelight as Dean Carter in 1964. That same year, he and Arlie Miller, a member of his band the Lucky Ones, started a home studio in Danville, Illinois to record both Carter and other musicians. The pair also ran the small Milky Way label, which released product by Carter and others. At times the sessions got pretty strange even by garage rock standards, with ukulele, accordion, dobro, and clarinet all heard in addition to the usual crunchy guitars on his outrageous cover of Presley's "Jailhouse Rock."
Carter went to the West Coast for a while in the late 1960s, recording a couple of singles in Washington State with Gene Vincent guitarist Jerry Merritt, for Merritt's Tell International label. He returned to the Midwest by the end of the decade to resume recording with Miller, and went back to billing himself as Arlie Neaville on record. By the early 1970s he went into gospel music, where he's remained ever since.

Jackson was still in high school when country singer Hank Thompson heard her sing on an Oklahoma City radio show and asked her to record with his band. She dated Elvis Presley, who encouraged her to step away from the country-tinged gospel she had been performing since childhood and try her hand at rock and roll. She developed her own distinctive voice and performed in a variety of styles, from folksy traditional tunes to country twang and high yodels to throaty, suggestive ballads.
Wanda's first records on Decca Records were country records made with Hank Thompson's band, one of which "You Can't Have My Love", a duet with Hank's bandleader, Billy Gray, made the Top 10 on the country charts in 1954. In 1956, she made her solo debut on Capitol Records with "I Gotta Know" which made a one week appearance on the country charts that year. It would be 5 years before she next appeared on the country charts.
Anyway, on 28 October, 2008, Jackson returns to Europe for a one-off appearance at the London Rock 'n' Roll Festival, appearing with Jerry Lee Lewis at the London Forum !

Sam Cooke Live at the Harlem Square Club ! Yeah !
Sam Cooke is one of my secret hero, I bet he’s one of yours too !
Frankly, most of Sam Cooke's pop hits were sugary, blanched affairs (don’t get me wrong, I love the tracks that way).
But this live album was the real deal, giving us the church-reared R&B singer who liked to tear up the clubs along the Southern chitlin circuit.

Yes folks ! The legenday Johnny Burnette rock’n’roll trio !
Boy, I can’t believe I forgot to post his avatar after 4 years of blogging (thanks for reminding me in the last comments)!
The band was one of my first musical shock ! Well you know, nobody’s perfect.

So yeah, make room for John Joseph "Johnny" Burnette !
After leaving high school, Johnny tried his hand at becoming a professional boxer, but after one fight with a sixty dollar purse and a broken nose or an encounter with Norris Ray, a top paycheck of $150 and a broken nose, he decided to quit the ring. He went to work on the barges traversing the Mississippi River, where Dorsey Burnette also worked. Johnny worked mainly as a deck hand while Dorsey worked as an oiler. Both of the brothers worked separately, but they would take their guitars on board and write songs during their spare time. After work they would go back to Memphis, where they would perform those and other songs at local bars, with a varying array of sidemen, including another former Golden Gloves champion named Paul Burlison, whom Dorsey had met at an amateur boxing tournament in Memphis in 1949.
And at one time or another, Dorsey, Johnny and Presley all worked for Crown Electric in Memphis. Burlison and the Burnette brothers worked in various aspects of the music business around Memphis and formed their group in 1953.
Paul Burlison had done some work with Howlin' Wolf, and it was Burlison's buzz-saw-like guitar work that gave the group it's distinct sound.
They attempted to record at Sam Phillips' local Sun Records recording studio, but were turned down !
So for economic reasons, in 1956, the three young men moved to New York, where they managed to get an audition with the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour. They won the competition three times in a row, which gained them a place in the finals, a recording contract with Coral Records and they officially became The Rock and Roll Trio. They also gained a manager, band leader Henry Jerome, and a drummer, Tony Austin (who was a cousin of Carl Perkins).
They recorded the jump blues tune Train Kept A-Rollin' and Tear It Up, neither of which became big-selling records but both of which are regarded today as important recordings in the evolution of rockabilly music. Dorsey left the group later in 1956 and was replaced by an old colleague from Memphis, Johnny Black, whose brother Bill would reach the charts several times in the years to come with his instrumental group, Bill Black's Combo.
Anyway, Johnny and Dorsey Burnette and visionary lead guitarist Paul Burlison, are the great lost rockabilly group of all time !
Their 1956-1957 recordings contains the rawest, purest rockabilly ever made !

Born in the farming community of Kenner upriver from New Orleans, Chris Kenner sang gospel music with his church choir, and moved to New Orleans in his teens.
In 1955 he made his first recordings, for a small label called Baton Records, without success, and in 1957 recorded his "Sick and Tired" for the Imperial Records label; Fats Domino covered it the next year and the song became a hit.
Moving to another New Orleans label, Instant, he began to work with pianist and arranger Allen Toussaint; this collaboration produced in 1961 a ton of classics hits.
In 1962 he produced his most enduring song, "Land of a 1000 Dances," which was recorded by Cannibal & the Headhunters, Wilson Pickett and The Action.
Yep, Kenner's recordings were marked by his rough-hewn voice and the elegant arrangements and piano of Toussaint.

Born 1936 in Nashville, Warner McPherson began his profitable association with Decca, becaming "Mack" thanks to an inattentive secretary.
He wrote his debut single "Is It Wrong (For Loving You)" and scored a Top Ten hit that remained on the country charts for over nine months and crossed over to become a minor pop hit. He later signed with Kapp Records and produced several albums for them. After performing on the Grand Ole Opry, he re-signed to Decca, where "Sittin' in an All Nite Cafe" made it to the Top Five.

Gary U.S. Bonds !

Born Gary Anderson in Jacksonville, Florida in 1939 , Gary U.S. Bonds moved at a young age to Norfolk, Virginia, where he sang in the Church choir, and with a group called The Turks.
He joined record producer Frank Guida's small Legrand record label and Guida changed Andersons name to U.S. Bonds in hope that it would be confused with a public service announcement advertising the sale of government bonds and thus get more airplay.
His hits had an infectious joyfulness and a unique sound: some have described them as seeming to have been recorded under water !
In the early 80's, rock superstar/Gary U. S. Bonds-fan Bruce Springsteen began to use Quarter To Three as his encore when he performed in live concerts. Together with rocker Miami Steve Van Zandt (sorry, Sylvio), Springsteen helped to revive Bonds' career !
Meanwhile, Gary U. S. Bonds continues to this day to be what he does best, a bloody bloody bloody great r&b singer !!

Prince La La born Lawrence Nelson (1936 - 1963) was born into a family rooted in the rich musical tradition of New Orleans. His father, Walter Nelson, was a noted jazz and R&B guitarist who played with R&B pioneer Smiley Lewis. His elder brother, Walter "Papoose" Nelson Jr., played extensively in the 50s and early 60s with Fats Domino and Professor Longhair, and was a featured session guitarist for seminal New Orleans bandlander and producer Dave Bartholomew.
A.F.O.'s publicity photos featured Lawrence in an eccentric yet regal costume drawn from both African and Mardi Gras traditions, and his otherworldly persona deeply impacted up-and-coming New Orleans musician Mac Rebennack, who borrowed much of La La's image in creating his own "Dr. John, the Night Tripper" guise.
Nelson suffering a drug overdose in 1963, he was 27.
It's notable that earlier the previous year, on the 28th February, 1962, Lawrence's brother Papoose died aged 31 in New York, also from a drug overdose !

The Originator is gone.

Here's a short bio for those who still live, actually hear, in the dark.

Born in McComb, Mississippi, he was adopted and raised by his mother's cousin, Gussie McDaniel, whose surname he adopted, becoming Ellas McDaniel. The family moved to Chicago when he was seven.He took violin lessons as a youth, but was inspired to become a guitarist after seeing John Lee Hooker.
He worked as a carpenter and mechanic, but also began a musical career playing on street corners with friends, including Jerome Green(c. 1934–1973),as a band called the Hipsters (later the Langley Avenue Jive Cats). In 1951, he landed a regular spot at the 708 Club on Chicago's South Side, with a repertoire influenced by Louis Jordan, John Lee Hooker, and Muddy Waters. He adopted the stage name, Bo Diddley, which is probably a southern black slang phrase meaning "nothing at all," as in "he ain't bo diddley." Another source says it was his nickname as a teenage Golden Gloves boxer. The nickname is also linked to the diddley bow, a two-stringed instrument that was used in the south by black musicians working in the fields.
In late 1954, he teamed up with harmonica player Billy Boy Arnold, drummer Clifton James and bass player Roosevelt Jackson, and recorded demos of "I'm A Man" and "Bo Diddley". They re-recorded the songs at Chess Studios with a backing ensemble comprising Otis Spann (piano), Lester Davenport (harmonica), Frank Kirkland (drums) and Jerome Green (maracas). The record was released in March 1955, and the A-side, "Bo Diddley", became a #1 R&B hit.
Bo Diddley is well known for the "Bo Diddley beat," a rumba-like beat, similar to "hambone", a style used by street performers who play out the beat by slapping and patting their arms, legs, chest, and cheeks while chanting rhymes. Occasionally (but incorrectly) referred to as a "shave and a haircut" beat, Diddley came across it while trying to play Gene Autry's "(I've Got Spurs That) Jingle, Jangle, Jingle". Three years before Bo's "Bo Diddley," a song that closely resembles it, "Hambone," was cut by Red Saunders' Orchestra with The Hambone Kids.
His songs (for example, "Hey Bo Diddley" and "Who Do You Love?") often have no chord changes; that is, the musicians play the same chord throughout the piece, so that excitement is created by the rhythm, rather than by harmonic tension and release. In his own recordings, Bo Diddley used a variety of rhythms, from straight back beat to pop ballad style, frequently with maracas by Jerome Green.
He also was an influential guitar player, with many special effects and other innovations in tone and attack. Bo Diddley's trademark instrument is the rectangular-bodied Gretsch, nicknamed "The Twang Machine" (although he had other similar-shaped guitars custom-made for him by other manufacturers), a guitar that he developed himself around 1958 and wielded in thousands of concerts over the years. In a 2005 interview on JJJ radio in Australia, Bo implied that the design was born from embarrassment. In an early gig, while jumping around on stage with a Gibson L5 guitar, he landed awkwardly hurting his groin.
His lyrics were often witty and humorous adaptations of folk music themes. The song "Bo Diddley" was based on the lullaby "Hush Little Baby." Likewise, "Hey Bo Diddley" is based on the folk song "Old MacDonald". The rap-style boasting of "Who Do You Love", a wordplay on hoodoo, used many striking lyrics from the African-American tradition of toasts and boasts. His "Say Man" and "Say Man, Back Again" both share a strong connection to the insult game known as the dozens. For example: "You got the nerve to call somebody ugly, why you so ugly the stork that brought you into the world ought to be arrested".
On November 20, 1955, he appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show only to infuriate the host. "I did two songs and he got mad," Bo Diddley later recalled. "Ed Sullivan said that I was one of the first colored boys to ever double-cross him. Said that I wouldn't last six months". Bo Diddley was asked to sing Tennessee Ernie Ford's hit "Sixteen Tons", but when he appeared on stage, he sang "Bo Diddley." He was banned from further appearances.
He continued to have hits through the late 1950s and the 1960s, including "Pretty Thing" (1956), "Say Man" (1959) and "You Can't Judge a Book By the Cover" (1962). He released a string of albums whose titles — including Bo Diddley Is a Gunslinger and Have Guitar, Will Travel — bolstered his self-invented legend. Between 1958 and 1963, Checker Records released 11 full-length albums by Bo Diddley. Although Bo Diddley was a breakthrough crossover artist with white audiences, appearing on the Alan Freed concerts, for example, he rarely tailored his compositions to teenage concerns.
In 1963, he starred in a UK concert tour with the Everly Brothers and Little Richard. The Rolling Stones, still unknown, were much lower on the same bill. Over the decades, his performances have ranged from sweaty Chicago clubs to rock and roll oldies tours. He appeared as an opening act for The Clash and as a guest of the Rolling Stones. On March 25, 1972, he played with The Grateful Dead at the Academy of Music in New York City.
In addition to the many songs identified with him, he wrote the pioneering pop song "Love Is Strange" for Mickey and Sylvia under a pseudonym.
Bo Diddley was one of the first American musicians to have women in his band, including Peggy Jones (aka Lady Bo, b.1940), Norma-Jean Wofford (aka The Duchess, c.1942-2005) and Cornelia Redmond (aka Cookie). He also set up one of the first home recording studios.

Emile Ford !

He was born Emile Sweetman in Castries, St. Lucia in the West Indies and grew up in (Funky) Nassau. Emile came to England in the mid-1950's with the hope of becoming a sound engineer, and his knowledge in that field contributed directly to his subsequent success fronting a band. Changing his name to Emile Ford, he put together a combo called the Checkmates, whose members included his two half-brothers, George Sweetman and Dave Sweetman, on sax and bass, respectively, along with Ken Street, Pete Carter, Les Hart, Alan Hawkshaw, and John Cuffley. As Emile Ford & The Checkmates, they won a talent contest sponsored by Pye Records and were awarded an audition and a contract that resulted in their first single, "Don't Tell Me Your Troubles" b/w "What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For", which was produced by the legendary Joe Meek.
The truth is that Ford wasn't really a very good singer (well, who really can tell who’s a good or bad singer ? No wait, Celine Dion’s a bad singer), but he had a good band behind him, and unlike every other rock 'n' roll act in England during this period, the group used only their own sound system, devised by Ford, at their performances, rather than the usual PA-system level equipment. As a result, they sounded better than any of the competition, sufficiently so to keep them working for years !
Emile Ford kept his hand in singing for a few more years before returning to audio engineering By now, it was routine for bands to travel with their own sound systems, and Emile found lots of other acts happy to avail themselves of his technical abilities and use his audio systems. When last heard of, he was living in California after residing in Scandinavia for several years.

Surf guitar guru, Mel Waldorf has brought together the seemingly unlikely pairing of traditional Jewish songs and instrumental surf guitar into a wonderfully funny and musically relevant CD entitled Meshugga Beach Party: Twenty Songs of The Chosen Surfers !
Born and raised in the suburbs of New York City, Mel Waldorf grew up loving the foods and traditions of his Jewish heritage as well as rock and roll music, and surf music in particular. Waldorf explains, "Growing up in Suffern, New York, there was no surf scene - no beach, no waves, and no surficilicious babes - but it was a fantasy more than a few of us shared."
Now settled in northern California, Waldorf continues to play with the Mel-Tones playing with members of several well-known San Francisco area surf bands. In addition to his recording and performing ventures, Waldorf has written orginal surf music for a variety of TV shows and movies including Nickelodeon's "SpongeBob SquarePants", Disney's "My Favorite Martian" and MTV's "The Real World." But it is Meshugga Beach Party - his own creation - that is currently garnering him the most attention !
Anyway, the whole mishpuchah will be there to kibitz, nosh and dance the Hora at the Meshugga Beach Party !

A change for a bit, let’s all go sentimental/depressive/romantic/suicidal shall we ?

Born Stanley Robert Vintula, Jr. in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, Bobby Vinton was probably the all-time most successful love singer of the Rock-Era.
After a brief spell in the U.S. Army, Vinton was signed to Epic Records in 1960 as a bandleader: "A Young Man With a Big Band." Two albums and several singles were not successful however, and with Epic ready to pull the plug, Vinton found his first hit single literally sitting in a reject pile. The song was titled "Roses Are Red (My Love)." It spent four weeks at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Arguably, his most famous song is 1963's "Blue Velvet" that also went to No.1. Twenty-three years later, my good friend David Lynch named his movie Blue Velvet after the song. In 1990, "Blue Velvet" climbed to the top of the music charts in Great Britain !
Anyway, from 1962 through 1972, Vinton had more Billboard #1 hits than any other male vocalist, including Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. In recognition of his recording career, Bobby Vinton has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6916 Hollywood Blvd.

Led by founding member Clarence Fountain, the rest of the blind boys of alabama currently consists of Eric McKinney, George Scott, Caleb Butler, Johnny Field, Jimmy Carter, Joey Williams, Donald Dillion and Aubrey Blount.
From their inception in the 1930s, when all were boys, the group's members turned their blindness into their chief selling point, and in fact, all members of the group except one are blind. They began singing when all were students at the Talladega Institute for the Deaf and Blind in Alabama, but didn't begin recording until 1948.
In 1950, after the death of one of their members, the group renamed themselves simply the Blind Boys of Alabama.
Anyway, they didn't enjoy widespread success until 1988, when they starred in an Obie Award-winning Broadway show, and more recently, recording with Jam hero Ben Harper.

The Rock-A-Teens !

The Rock-A-Teens were a youthful sextet from Richmond, Virginia, led by Vic Mizelle (vocals, guitar). The other members were Bobby "Boo" Walke (guitar), Bill Cook (guitar), Eddie Robinson (sax), Paul Dixon (bass) and Bill Smith (drums). They first opened for business during 1956 as high school band Boo Walke & the Rockets.
In 1959 they auditioned for George Donald McGraw, who owned a record shop in Salem, Virginia, and a record label, Mart Records, to which Mickey Hawks was contracted at the time. McGraw was impressed by the boys' own composition "Rock-A-Teen Boogie", a falsetto-refrained instrumental with one of rock's first midtune drum solos. Retitled "Woo-Hoo", it came out on Doran 3515 (a subsidiary of Mart) in August 1959.

These first pressings on Doran credited the Rock-A-Teens as the writers of "Woo Hoo". However, none other than Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith sued the group for plagiarism, much to the confusion of the young boys. McGraw then said "I'll buy the song off you guys and that way they can't sue you". For a few hundred dollars, the song got a new owner. Unbeknownst to the group, McGraw struck a deal with Morris Levy at Roulette Records in New York to reissue the record for national distribution on Roulette 4192, now with composer credits on both sides going to G.D. McGraw.

Anyway, that was the frantic story of probably one the most frantic song ever recorded.

They played at high school and local dances and such, and eventually earned enough to rent a jazz studio, World Pacific, to record. Nick Hefner played on only one track. In about three and a half hours, they had an album. Just months earlier, The Beach Boys' released a vocal single, "Surfing Safari" and some months after the Challenger's "Surfbeat" release, Dick Dale's first album was released…
